Richmond HUG 9/28/16: On-Page SEO Best Practices to Make Users and Search Engines Love Your Website

[fa icon="calendar'] Oct 6, 2016 4:09:50 PM

As inbound marketers, we focus heavily on creating the right content: does it offer real value to readers? is the tone on brand? Are we meeting the customer at the appropriate place in the buyer’s journey? But, if we neglect the fundamentals of on-page SEO best practices, we limit the chance that the content we’re creating will be visible to Google and rank highly in search results.
Last Thursday, I gave a presention on on-page SEO. In my talk, I walked through what SEO really means, why it’s so important, and what small tweaks you can make to your website’s content to help make it more discoverable.

Here are some quick takeaways from the presentation:
  • Empathize with your customers and think about their challenges
  • Write great content that satisfies a need your customer personas have
  • Add in keywords in page titles
  • Make the page titles great (concise, meets user's expectations, enticing)
  • Add in keywords in meta descriptions
  • Write great meta descriptions (use intrigue, mystery, meet user's expectations)
  • Optimize your URLs
  • Use the right anchor text when linking internally
  • Use keywords in image alt-text
  • Make your content shareable

We wrapped up the meeting with a general discussion about SEO and took questions from Richmond Huggers about on-page SEO best practices.
